Avignon
Where to start?
We have 3 days in Avignon which is a whirlwind stop really.
We have booked a half day tour of Pont due Gard, a huge Roman Aquaduct and some wine areas of Provence including
Chateauneuf du Pape, where the pope had his summer residence when he lived in Avignon. Also a half day tour of St Remy and an ancient hilltop town. On the middle day we will catch a train to Marseille.
Avignon is a town of 90,000 with 30,0000 inside complete city walls. There is restricted traffic in many streets and hundreds of cafes etc. Very pleasant for tourists. 9 Pope's lived here.
The bridge in the song was 2 kilometers long but is now only 4 arches.
We cafe'd here, as our meals were not provided by our host (demi pension).
This lead to an increasing problem. It was to hot to sit inside small hot cafes, and outside everyone smoked. First world problem, I know!
